Zappanale 18 @ Bad Doberan

As every year in August :o)
3-5. august 2007

THURSDAY:

As usual, for many fans began the Zappanale already on Thursday evening in Bad Doberan around and in the Kamp Theater. It was a documentary about Wild Man Fischer and afterwards performed Christophe Godin.
For the first time a stage was built in the form of a truck in front of the Kamp Theater. After Christophe Godin played the Captain Beefheart Project (Chen Unst), which was accompanied by several multimedia installations.

FRIDAY:

Don Preston with his Akashic Ensemble welcomed the visitors on Friday afternoon. Indestructible, one could only say. The unconventional and abundant  sound of the band rose sometimes in funky vocal excursions.

After the Akashic Ensemble and the regular  break  performed the British Funksters Monty & The Butchers up for 90 minutes on stage with their loud sharp-edged rock.

The following Act was one of the highlights of the festival: Mörglbl!  The trio played avant-rock, Steve Vai, AC / DC interpreted in the Brazilian style and Deep Purple in subtle jazz. With plenty of humor, the trio played crazy. Their funny grimaces, gestures and movements on stage were  not only fun, but also showed the joy of making music on their own. Godin is a comedian, a gorgeous gifted guitarist who knows no stylistic barriers between metal, prog and jazz.

Immediately afterwards performed I Virtuosi Dal Pianeta Talento, virtuos Zappa experts. Their interpretations were so complex inspirad mostly by Zappa’s ’70s jazz-rock.  The improvisations of the 12-member ensembles were radical and uncompromising wtih avantgarde solos. Bass, brass and marimba, guitar and drums as well as the keyboards were burning the stage.

So two highlights one after the other. And then came the third.  Ike Willis Project / Object without Ike Willis on the stage, because he got involved in a traffic accident. Napoleon Murphy Brock, as a guest was on stage and let splash continually his charm along with his high energy.

Next was Trigon, as the last band of this first evening. They play as they say “Power-Space-Kraut-jam-rock”.

SATURDAY:

The start was made be the good-humored Jim Cohen, highnoon at the Kamp Theater in  Bad Doberan. Mr. Jim then took Dr. Dot on stage and held an interview with her, as we all know, has made a name as a masseuse.

On the festival site, Chen Unst as Captain Beefheart Project  made extreme avant-garde. First  only computer sounds and spoken Beefheart Lyrics, later the band raged with bass and drums and crazed computer sounds. For me one of the best parts of the festival.
From Tromsø Norway came Team Zappa. Great cast, lots of brass, passionate concert, wild improvisations, gorgeous virtuoso.
After that performed Octafish with their funky, jazz-inspired progressive rock that they call  “Industrial Fake Jazz”. Experimental and witty improvisations.
During the sunset, played Kimono Draggin ‘, remaining rudiments of Dr. Dark, who already played on the Zappanale, they tried simpler mix of Zappa, Stooges and Talking Heads.
Sex Without Nail Bros. – the Austrian formation with three singers took “Roxy and Elsewhere” and brought Zappa’s comic, witty, wicked, intelligent and entertaining parable about the rock business and the “American Way Of Life” in all facets.
The day finnished with Space Debris, in the Krautrock way, hanging in their songs old international models such as UFO, Deep Purple with long improvisations and solos. Organ, guitar and drums were enough to hunt some heavy rock attacks on the festival ground.

SUNDAY:

Sunday started with the Arf Society meeting. Meanwhile on stage, psychedelic rock with Polytoxicomane Philharmonie.
The Great Googly Moogly from Sweden, revealed themselves asvery funny guys. Brass and – Mallets! Marimba! After two pieces of Zappa, that were not been previously heard, they played  Zappa classics, once again “Florentine Pogen” and “Montana” .
Jazz project Hundeshagen, Body and stomach band Zappanale, already several times here and played the magnificent music of the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the astonished ears.
And then the Italians Harmonia Ensemble took the stage. Keyboard, Cello, Clarinet. Up to 7 musicians in the band project, four were on the Zappanale and also the band rudiment knew to cast a spell over the fans.
The festival ended with the main act:  Chad Wackerman Trio. The Chad Wackerman Trio performed best academic virtuos jazz-rock.
